Purchased because I wanted a large caliber bolt, and I like classic 700 rifles... and I confused 338 Win Mag with 338 Lapua. Dumb.

The 700 Classic was chambered in 338 Win Mag as a limited edition only in 1987.

Research

The 2008 Gun Digest article "The Remington Model 700 Limited Edition Classic, Production History & Cartridge Chronology" by Steve Gash states the prodcution life of the 700 Classic can be split into two phases: the early 700 Classics which were offered in 7 common calibers from its debut in 1978 to 1980, and the later 700 Limited Edition (LE) Classics which started in 1981 until the Classic model was discontinued in 2005. "They all have straight grained, but nice quality, walnut stocks of the same design and the only differences I see is that some - typically those offered in larger calibers - have iron sights fitted and a thicker recoil pad."

Remarms.com firearm history page on the model 700 states: "Caliber/Gauge: ... 338 Win Mag (1987 Classic, 1988 Custom Shop, 1989 - 2002 standard offering, 2003 Custom Shop only), ... Variations: ... Classic (1978)"

The limited edition for 1987 was chambered in 338 Win Mag. 4,792 were produced.

Overview for 2006 308win from remington.com 2006

Model 700™ Classic. Unrivaled Out-Of-The-Box Accuracy.

Widely popular since its introduction as a sporting cartridge in 1952, the 308 Win. has established a reputation with target shooters and big game hunters as a highly accurate and effective cartridge. Adding to the validity and popularity of this cartridge was the U.S. military's decision to adopt the 308 Win. (7.62x51mm NATO) as the official military rifle cartridge in 1954. Remington has selected this time-honored "classic" cartridge for the 2005 Model 700 Classic chambering - the 25th edition to this highly collectible series. The Model 700 Classic bolt-action rifle features a traditional American walnut, straight-combed "Classic" style stock with low-gloss, satin finish, crisp-cut checkering and swivel studs. Adding to the distinguished appearance of this Model 700 is the clean 24-inch high polished, blued carbon steel barrel and short action receiver. The hinged floor plate magazine has a capacity of four plus one in the chamber. Dating back to 1981, the impressive list of one-year limited edition Model 700 Classics has included many of the truly great centerfire chamberings.

Model 700™ Classic Features
  • Receiver machined from solid-steel bar stock resulting in uniformity and strength.
  • Cylindrical receiver design provides a solid bedding area in the stock for consistent shot placement.
  • Recessed bolt face locks up inside the counter-bored breech of the barrel which is surrounded by the receiver, forming "three-rings-of-steel" enclosing the cartridge case head for unparalleled strength.
  • Integral extractor is set in a groove inside the rim of the bolt face, uniformly supporting the cartridge head.
